Deep (Throat) End of the Pool?

Who is Deep Throat? No, not that Deep Throat, this Deep Throat.

According to recent reports, the long awaited revelation of the name of the Nixon White House insider responsible for leaking the details of the Watergate scandal is about to take place. Evidently the real DT is terminally ill.

We already know a few things about DT:
1. DT is a man
2. DT is/was a smoker
3. DT was highly placed in the Nixon administration, almost definitely as a top member of the White House Staff.

CNN has a good roundup of possible suspects here.

Who do you think DT is? Current speculation seems to be focused on Chief Justice Rehnquist, who was a WH staffer during the Nixon years, working in the Attorney General's office, because of his thyroid cancer.

Taking bets now.... The winner (correct name and closest date of death) gets a featured link over here and of course, bragging rights!

I always thought it was Kissinger. CNN says there's little evidence and I have long since forgotten why I thought it was Kissinger but I have thought so for about 25 years now.

yeah, Kissinger looked pretty sick the last time I saw him on TV.

I like Ford, myself. Wouldn't that just be a riot? it could certainly explain why he pardoned Nixon (guilty conscience??)

I think it's Rehnquist.

Wouldn't Rehnquist have already been on the Supreme COurt when the leaks were happening? I suppose there's nothing technically wrong with that thought it feels unseemly. It just seems that, having moved over to the Court, he'd be walled off from info.

Oh, and as for date of death I'll go with June 15th.

I was trying to figure out who was highly placed enough, yet currently that sick, since presumably a former official being that sick would attract some press (which is why it seems dangerous/silly to me to say "oh by the way, DT is terminally sick so stay tuned for news...), yet not someone we would hear about. Or, if it's de judge, hear about but not readily connect.

Intriguing theory.

I highly doubt it was Kissinger. Not the right type of person for it.

Although he doesn't fit criteria two and three, i think a case can be made that deep throat in fact is the pope. He's been sick lately, he is a man, and everyone knows that the vatican has access to lots of secrets.

I think he's just a compilation of half-made up stuff, rumors, etc, that turned out to be right. They'll wait until somebody with few friends/family left & then say--see! it was him!

Or not. I like Gergen, or the assistant counsel Fred Fielding.

I don't know about his health but the best candidates would seem to be one of the Steins, either Ben or his father Herb. They lived next to Carl Bernstein when he and bBen were growing up. Herb was Nixon's cheif economic advisor and Ben was a speech writer. Ben has admitted to smoking, drinking, whoring, and using pot and his sense of humor would seem to make his a likely candidate to come up with the pseudomym "Deep Throat". His peculiar speaking tone might also make him a candidate. For the record, Stein denies being "Deep Throat"

Well, Herb Stein IS dead, and Ben seems to be OK. I saw him on some show or other recently, and he looked pretty well. Of course, I agree with you that he is definitely the tyoe who would choose the name "deep throat"
